The Wedgewood Rooms 25/02/10

The Wedgewood Rooms has always been one of those venues that either makes or breaks a band. Mainly because it is the place to play in Portsmouth and if you don’t pull it off live here then you don’t get a second chance. Andy and Jock have both played there before respectively 15 years apart. Harley and Beanz were naturally ‘nervous’ especially as Kneeslider were the only covers band on a bill with other local bands of the indie persuasion playing ‘original’ material.

On arrival it became evident that there was going to be a shortened set and no sound check. This didn’t do much to help the nerves, but it was nice to not have to set up all the gear for a change and the band concentrated on getting the little gear they bought with them on stage and retiring to the bar next door for a drink and to meet those had made the journey to see their band play the Wedge.

On return to the Wedge, the first band started off with a set of original material which did little to get the crowd pumped up. At around 9.25 the distinctive image of fours guys dressed in black shirts took to the stage. Firing through the first 3 songs, the crowd certainly took notice with some of the audience recognising the songs and singing along from the rather oppressive barrier in front of the stage.

Kneeslider delivered and continued to work through their shortest set yet with the drive and general take no prisoners attitude finishing with down under which appeared to totally surprise the crowd.

On reflection, had the Wedge been better attended and our allocated time been more than 30 minutes then Kneeslider would have stormed the place. As it stands Kneeslider played well and certainly warmed the crowd up for the other bands. The opportunity to play the Wedge certainly should not be overlooked and was a great experience. Kneeslider certainly left their mark. It was also nice to see the regulars and other bands supporting, thanks Paparazzi.

Keep checking the website for great photos which were taken this evening. Did The Wedge break Kneeslider? No it just made us realise that we can hold our own in any situation!
